About IRC |
|
IRC was created in 1988 by Jarkko Oikarinen. It started in Finland and is now used in over 65 countries. It has grown into a popular and exciting way for people to meet from around the world.
IRC works easily. When you type something to say, that line goes to the server you are using. Then, that server is linked to other servers, and the line you typed is displayed to everyone else on the channel. Of course this always can't happen quickly, especially with the growing population of the Internet. Sometimes there is lag, time between when you type the message and other users see.
The #sciastro chat channel is hosted by Starlink-IRC, one of the friendliest of the IRC networks. Starlink-IRC is comprised of 8 or 9 servers that are linked together to form the network. They have an excellent web site at http://www.starlink-irc.org that has lots of helpful information about how to connect and how to get the most out of the IRC experience.
Before you can begin chatting on #sciastro, you must first connect to a server. Connecting to Starlink-IRC is easy using a variety of IRC client programs that are available on the internet. Most of our users use Pirch or mIRC for Windows computers, or Ircle for the Macintosh.
All of these programs come with a listing of the major IRC networks and their servers pre-installed. Starlink-IRC should already be among those choices, so all you have to do is select that network and pick from the servers listed. If, by chance, you cannot get that server to respond, try another one.
If you don't find Starlink-IRC listed, simply type /server irc.starlink-irc.org in any of the windows. Once connected to a server, type /join #sciastro and you can begin chatting!
If you are still having problems, please refer to http://www.irchelp.org/ for additional information about irc in general, or http://www.starlink-irc.org for more information about the network and getting connected.
